Why platforms ask for a U.S. tax number
U.S. payment and marketplace platforms collect tax information from sellers to meet IRS reporting rules. Depending on your setup they may ask for a W-8 or W-9 form and a U.S. taxpayer identification number.
ITIN or EIN — which one do they want?
If you sell through a U.S. LLC, the platform usually wants the company's EIN. Many owners also need a personal ITIN — for example to file U.S. returns, claim treaty benefits, or when a bank or platform asks for the owner's own tax number.
- Selling as an individual with U.S. income: an ITIN is typically the number you can get
- Selling through a U.S. LLC: get an EIN for the company, plus an ITIN for yourself if needed
