ITIN vs EIN: what's the difference?

Two different U.S. tax numbers, often confused. Here's which one you need — and when you need both.

ITIN: a tax number for a person

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is issued by the IRS to individuals who need a U.S. tax number but can't get a Social Security Number. You apply with Form W-7 and identity documents such as a passport.

EIN: a tax number for a business

An Employer Identification Number identifies a business entity, like a U.S. LLC, with the IRS. It's applied for with Form SS-4 and is what banks and platforms usually ask for in the company's name.

Quick comparison

  • Who it's for — ITIN: individuals · EIN: businesses
  • IRS form — ITIN: W-7 · EIN: SS-4
  • Documents — ITIN: passport or accepted IDs · EIN: company details
  • Typical use — ITIN: personal returns, treaty claims · EIN: company bank accounts, payments, filings

When you need both

Non-U.S. founders running a U.S. LLC often need an EIN for the company and an ITIN for themselves — for personal filings or when a bank or platform asks for the owner's tax number.
